So…Where Is That Winter?

As snow and sleet start to fall around the Washington DC Area, we at CroppMetcalfe are wondering: Does this mean winter is finally here?!

Even though the groundhog saw his shadow, does this mean we are in for another six weeks of this MILD winter? While it can be hard to miss the frigid temperatures of winters’ past, it’s important to remember cold weather can start at a moment’s notice. To ensure you are not stuck without heat when that cold snap arrives, you should schedule a maintenance check for your home’s heating system.

A maintenance check is important for many reasons. These check-ups help identify problems before they turn into larger (and more expensive) repairs. Completing a small repair right now will mean your system will be ready to go when that cold weather finally hits.

Don’t be left out in the cold! Schedule an appointment today!

2011 Year End Meeting

At the end of each year, CroppMetcalfe holds a meeting to reward our technicians for a job well done. In the past, there has been three separate meetings at our three different locations.

This year, however, the meetings were combined into one large meeting at our new Hilltop Location. In addition to the normal agenda, we also recognized new NATE Certified technicians, went over upcoming trips, and even hyped our 2011 Annual Gala!

Everyone seemed to enjoy the new format and we’re looking forward to trying to improve upon the meeting next year too!

Our New Sign!

What started out as a plot of grass and an idea has finally turned into our brand new digital sign! It’s located at our Fairfax location on the corner of Hilltop and Prosperity and we’re thrilled with the results – special kudos to Kerley Signs for all of their help throughout the process.

What sort of messages would you like to see displayed? Time and temperature? Home comfort tips? Seasonal specials? Let us know and then make sure to stop by and take a look!

Winter Plumbing Tips

Winter is just about here and that means frozen pipes are almost here too! Frozen and burst pipes can lead to MAJOR damage in your home. If this plumbing disaster happens to you, make sure to contact the experts at CroppMetcalfe!

The good news is there are easy things you can do to prevent frozen pipes NOW, before the really cold weather hits:

  • Remove garden hoses from outside hose spigots
  • Turn off indoor valves to hose spigots
  • Open outdoor hose spigots to allow water to drain
  • Loosen bleeder cap on indoor valves to drain all water from pipes & spigots

New Blog Series: Meet Your 5-Star Technician

Welcome to our new blog series–Meet Your 5-Star Technician!  You already know our 5-Star Technicians are some of the most knowledgeable and skilled techs in the Heating and Air Conditioning industry, but we thought it would be fun to get to know the person behind the uniform. Each week, we will ask a different technician a few questions about himself and life in the HVAC industry.

To kick things off, we spoke with one of our HVAC service technicians , John Buffington to find out a little bit more about how he began his career in the industry and why he’s stuck with it.  Take it away John!

1. Describe your job at CroppMetcalfe
“My job at CroppMetcalfe is to provide consumers with 5-Star Heating and Air Conditioning service and maintenance for better peace of mind.  My job includes everything from preventing common failures, fixing broken equipment, as well as providing customers with helpful advice to get the most out of their equipment.”

2. How long have you worked at CroppMetcalfe?
“I have enjoyed working at CroppMetcalfe for over two years.”

3. How did you get involved in the HVAC industry?
“During my sophomore year of high school, I needed to choose one more class to complete my schedule, so I decided to take an HVAC course.  I chose the HVAC class mainly because my grandfather had been in the industry for years.  After taking that first-year class, I just couldn’t turn down the second year class. Following my Junior year of high school, I was a helper at CroppMetcalfe and gained a lot of knowledgeable experience. Once I finished high school, I decided to take up a career in the HVAC industry.”

4. What is the most interesting thing that has happened to you since you’ve worked at CroppMetcalfe?
“There is never a dull day working for CroppMetcalfe, but the most interesting thing outside of the work place that has happened to me would have to be getting married this past summer.”

5. What advice do you have for someone who is thinking about beginning a career in the HVAC industry?
“I would advise them to do a ride-along with a technician to see if it is something they would be passionate about. If they like the work, then make sure to get the proper education and come join our high-demand industry!”

Thanks for letting us get to know you a little better, John! Be on the lookout for the next installment of Meet Your 5-Star Technician!

Tips For Home Security

The best way to improve the safety of your home and family is of course, prevention. An installed and monitored security system is a great start to improving your safety, but here are some other several simple steps you can take to make sure what matters most is protected.

  • Involve everyone in a home fire safety program. Identify and remove potential hazards like frayed electrical cords, overloaded sockets, and piles of rags.
  • Get the neighbors together and ask for a meeting with your local police to discuss common-sense security measures.
  • Put a hold on your mail and deliveries while on vacation. Use timed lights so it appears that someone is home while you are away.
